Listen To My Silence

Listen to my silence.

Through the clutter of life comes forth a clear silence
that is apart from the chatter of mere men whose voices
seek to compete with the heavenlies.

Dare my soul to utter even one sound aloud?

Shall my heart beat to the sound of footsteps coming
up behind me?

Were it possible, would these words inside my head
be made visible to those invisible who walk beside
my body?

Again and again I fight this urge to speak and
to break through the quietude of "my sitting down
and my rising up" with each brand new day.

Listen to my silence.

Listen to my silence when you touch a blade of grass
that lies in waiting for you to touch it as you pass.

Listen to my silence when you take a skyward glance
in the midst of the noonday. For, it shall interpret for
you every word ~ my silence to convey.

May the silences of your life reach out and take you
along with them into the new year, 2008.
